On September 26, 2009, Typhoon Ketsana (Ondoy) hit Metro Manila and its neighboring towns. It experienced the heaviest rainfall in 40 years. More than 200 people are dead (number still rising), thousands missing and 450,000 displaced as 80% of the area was submerged during the peak of the storm which poured more rain than Hurricane Katrina. Many have been stuck on top of their roofs for almost two days already. The Government has been ineffective in addressing the problem and rescue infrastructure is weak so every one is doing their best to help out.
I happened to be in Manila during this storm and I am trying to help out by providing information on how people can donate to the rescue efforts online. So, here is a listing of possible ways where you can donate via Credit Card online if you want to:
1. Donate directly to Philippine National Red Cross. -There is no option to donate specifically to the Typhoon Ketsana (Ondoy) yet and denominations are in pesos. (Update: You can now donate specifically to the victims of Typhoon Ketsana (local name: Ondoy). If you prefer to send money via wire transfer, their bank account info can be found here.
2. Donate directly to other charity foundations / not for profit organizations.
a. GMA Kapuso Foundation – a charity organization created by one of the leading TV stations in the Philippines. No way of donating directly to flood victims. US Dollar and Philippine denominations available.
b. Philippines Jesuits – The Philippine branch of a Catholic religious order that also does many charities. Most of the schools they run in affected areas were converted into relief centers. To donate specifically to Typhoon Ondoy/Ketsana victims type “xs4ondoy” in the “I would like to donate to:” portion. Again, this is Peso denominated.
c. TXTpower.org A not-for-profit consumer protection organization that is using their paypal resources as venue for online donations to flood victims. US Dollar denominated.
3. Donate via www.askfukuoka.com/dreaming
I made a paypal donation facility where you can donate in yen or dollars. The funds will go to our paypal account and we will forward the donations to the Philippine National Red Cross. We can email you a receipt if you prefer. The sooner you donate the better as I will return to Fukuoka by the weekend and I will need time to transfer the funds. You don’t need a paypal account. You can use any major credit card to donate.
If you prefer to donate in dollars:
